Animal Production I is an introductory unit designed to provide learners with foundational knowledge and practical skills in the production and management of farm animals. The unit covers the principles of animal production, including the importance of livestock in agricultural and economic development, classification of livestock production systems, and basic animal husbandry practices. Learners are introduced to breeds and characteristics of major livestock species, housing and equipment, feeding and nutrition, health and disease control, breeding and reproduction, and animal welfare. Emphasis is placed on sustainable livestock production, efficient resource use, and practical skills relevant to smallholder and commercial farming systems. The course prepares learners for further studies and careers in animal production, agricultural extension, and related agricultural enterprises.
